Florida offers little oversight over state guardians

Professional guardians are court-appointed caretakers who manage the lives of those a judge deems are unable to care for themselves. It's a growing business. Today, Florida has 551 registered professional guardians, up 121 percent from a decade ago. But in the business of guardianship requirements are few, rewards are many and the rules don't always apply to everyone. More from WFTS and WTXL.

Miami-Dade spent $80 million on transit studies. Now obsolete, they’re being redone

A county audit offers the latest reminder that Miami-Dade’s current push to settle on an historic transit plan is a repeat of past efforts. A 2018 audit of Miami-Dade’s transit spending includes a brief passage summarizing past expenditures on the six commuting corridors being studied under the county’s 2016 SMART Plan. Firefly Aerospace aims to fill 'small rocket' niche on Space Coast

Firefly Aerospace announced Friday it will open a rocket-manufacturing facility on Florida's Space Coast on Cape Canaveral, adding momentum to a new commercial space race. Firefly Aerospace will join SpaceX, Jeff Bezos' Blue Origin, satellite manufacturer OneWeb and a cluster of smaller companies that have kicked off a new chapter in American space exploration. Super Bowl LIV aims to equip diverse South Florida businesses with opportunities

Surge Quiñonez, a Miami artist and South Florida sports fan, never thought he could combine his love for sports and art until roughly four years ago when he began working with the Miami Dolphins. Like many local business owners in South Florida, Quiñonez is trying to get in on the action surrounding Super Bowl LIV, which will be a record 11th Super Bowl in South Florida and culminate the NFL’s 100th season. Orlando Ritz-Carlton's farm feeds guests, keeps food sources local

Nestled between the fifth and sixth holes of Orlando’s Ritz-Carlton Golf Club sits a hidden garden and farm. The Whisper Creek Farm supplies the 13 restaurants of the Ritz-Carlton Orlando, Grande Lakes with fruits, vegetables, herbs and spices from of its 7,000-square-foot garden. It also feeds guests at the neighboring JW Marriott, Grande Lakes, which serves eggs retrieved from the dozens of chickens, ducks and quail that call the farm home. More from the Orlando Sentinel.

All dogs go to ... church? Welcome to Florida

 “We sometimes have 10 to 12 dogs at a time,” says Father Albert Cutie, the rector at the Saint Benedict’s Episcopal Church in Plantation. “You never really hear them much — unless they encounter each other after Communion and then they begin to bark at each other. But everybody expects that.” Saint Benedict’s Episcopal Church, whose motto is “all are welcome,” began offering the dog-friendly service about 10 years ago, and it has been a popular offering ever since.
