Profit up 51 percent at Florida’s banks and thrifts

Florida’s financial institutions racked up another strong earnings performance in the second quarter. The state’s 121 banks and thrifts earned a combined $499 million in the April-June period, a gain of $168 million, or 51 percent, over the previous year, according to data released last week by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. For a lark, and some funding, city of Mayo changes name to 'Miracle Whip'

The town of Mayo is dressing up its name, at least for a few days. The small north-central Florida town has changed its name to "Miracle Whip," as part of a branding prank to draw attention to the city and the Kraft Heinz salad dressing product. More from USA Today and the Tampa Bay Times.

Miami-based El Dorado Furniture opens in Naples with three more locations in the works

El Dorado Furniture was founded in 1967 after the store’s founder, Manuel Capó, escaped Cuba with two of his sons on a sailboat during the Castro regime. Since then El Dorado Furniture has grown to more than 1,000 employees and has 13 showrooms and three outlet centers in Florida, including eight stores in Miami-Dade County. Cyber-threats abound as Florida gets ready to vote
