Catalina M. Avalos focuses her practice in the areas of labor and employment and complex commercial litigation. She often serves as quasi in-house counsel for various clients providing advice for their employment needs. Avalos handles cases involving harassment, race discrimination in the workplace, enforcement of non-compete agreements, business partnership disputes, tortious interference, wrongful death actions, violations of the Fair Labor Standards Act, contractual disputes and claims brought under Florida’s Uniform Trade Secrets Act, Florida Whistle-blower’s Act, and the Americans with Disabilities Act. Avalos has tried numerous jury trials involving both civil and criminal matters.

Avalos is chair of the Broward County Bar Association Labor & Employment Section, a certified Florida Supreme Court circuit civil mediator and has served as a special master and arbitrator in numerous cases. She has been nominated for the “Leaders in Law Award” and maintains an active trial practice.

Avalos has been recogized for her professionalism by the Broward County Bar’s Young Lawyer’s Division and received the Broward County Bar Association’s President’s Award while serving as judge. She is a member of the board of directors of Child Net and a member of the Broward Women Alliance Group. She has served on the boards of various legal associations including the Broward County Bar, Broward County Women’s Lawyers Association and the Broward County Hispanic Bar Association.

Stephanie J. Toothaker serves as chair of the firm’s land use, governmental relations and procurement practice. Representing private equity firms, innovative companies and entrepreneurial individuals seeking complex land development entitlements, her specific expertise on these matters is focused on innovative activation of property rights, complex mixed use projects, land use plan amendments, zoning modifications and site plan approvals in the commercial, residential and hospitality sectors.

Toothaker’s practice includes niche representation for European-style sporting and destination lifestyle events with worldwide television coverage. Clients have included Red Bull Global Rallycross, Swatch Volleyball World Championships, Key West Race Week, the Lauderdale Yacht Club and the largest boat show firm in the world, Show Management/Active Interest Media. She has a proven ability to leverage resources and relationships, meet challenging deadlines and enable profitable outcomes with global reach.

Toothaker is a regular contributor to Florida Trend and Go Riverwalk magazines, is involved with a broad range of charitable and civic organizations throughout Florida, including the University of Florida College of Liberal Arts and Sciences board. She sits on the executive committees of Bonnet House Board and the Fort Lauderdale Transportation Management Association (Sun Trolley). She recently became the first female legal officer and subsequently the first female elected governor of the Lauderdale Yacht Club.
