Legislature considers barking tree frog as state symbol

Will the barking tree frog become Florida's official state amphibian?

For the third time this legislative session, Florida's senators have contemplated making the barking tree frog as a state symbol. And for the third time, they unanimously agreed that Florida should be the first state to boast an official amphibian.

The barking tree frog is a pleasant creature, both in color and disposition, said the sponsor of SB 502, Sen. Steve Oelrich, R-Gainesville. The barking tree frog is also easier to hold than other frogs and toads, he said.

"And it does not cause warts," he said.

See the history of this amphibian in Senate Bill - SB 502 here.
