Within a day of Japan's earthquake and tsunami, hundreds of ShelterBoxes were in transport to the most damaged areas. Each ShelterBox contains a tent for up to 10 people, a stove, blankets, a water filtration system and other survival tools. ShelterBox is a Britain-based charity; its American affiliate, ShelterBox USA, is headquartered in Lakewood Ranch. Since 2000, the charity has shipped ShelterBoxes to more than 70 countries following more than 140 natural disasters. More than 28,000 of the boxes were sent to Haiti following the earthquake there last year. Tax-deductible contributions can be made at
