Players

Development -- Seth M. Wise has been named president of Fort Lauderdale-based Levitt Commercial, an industrial, office and retail real estate developer. The company is a newly created subsidiary of Levitt Corp., a home builder owned by BankAtlantic Bancorp. Wise had been vice president of Levitt Corp.

Education -- Lynn Edward Weaver is retiring as president of Melbourne-based Florida Institute of Technology. During Weaver's 14-year tenure, he helped raise $25 million for new buildings, including a student plaza, and for improving the school's appearance. Weaver will step down next June.

Government -- President George W. Bush named prominent Miami venture capitalist Betsy S. Atkins to the seven-member advisory committee of the Pension Benefit Guaranty Corp., the federal corporation that works to guarantee payment of benefits to participants in private-sector pension plans. Atkins was co-founder of Ascend Communications, which was acquired by Lucent Technologies in 1999, and is now president and CEO of Baja LLC, a venture capital firm that focuses on early-stage technology companies.

Healthcare -- Patrick P. Nicholas has been tapped as COO, a newly created position, at HPA Inc., a Tampa-based health insurance administrator. Nicholas, 32, was most recently a vice president at Conseco Group Risk Management.

Real Estate -- Laura Holquist, 40, was promoted to president of Allete Properties, which owns or controls land marketing companies, including Lehigh Corp., Cape Coral Holdings, Palm Coast Holdings and Sugarmill Woods. She replaces Donnie Crandall, who moved to a new post at Florida Water Services, a unit of Allete Inc. Holquist, who is based in Fort Myers, most recently was Allete's senior vice president and treasurer as well as president of Lehigh Corp. and Cape Coral Holdings.

Technology -- Storage Access Technologies in Boca Raton, a data storage management company, named Ian Sutcliffe chairman and CEO. He replaces Serafino Iacono, who resigned as CEO and president. Sutcliffe previously was president of Mediconsult.com, which was sold to Davie-based Andrx Corp.'s internet division, Cybear.

Telecommunications - Pensacola-based Network Telephone promoted Vincent Oddo to COO, a new position. Oddo, 44, was most recently chief information officer for the company and has worked in telecommunications for more than 20 years.The company is searching for a new CIO.

Craig Russey is out as president and CEO of Fort Lauderdale-based Viasource, a broadband enabler and wireless communications provider. Russey, one of the company's founders, resigned as part of a restructuring effort. Colin McWay, most recently executive vice president of business operations
for the company, will take over as president and COO. Russey will remain a director.


Obituary
Peter Rosendahl, 1944 -- 2001
Peter Rosendahl, a leader in negotiating the Everglades restoration plan, died on Sept. 30 after a yearlong battle with cancer. He was 57.
Rosendahl, who held a doctorate in environmental engineering from the University of Miami, played a key role in bridging the gap between the sugar industry and environmentalists. He served as vice president for environmental affairs for the Fanjul family's Florida Crystals Corp. from 1993 until his death.


Correction -- Chuck Kline remains a partner at the law firm of White & Case and heads the firm's litigation practice in Miami.
