Joseph Farrell Jr.'s career has taken his company far afield — creating artificial reefs along the U.S. coast, pulling wayward barges off beaches, refloating a sunken dry dock in Guam. Now, under a contract from Shipping Corporation of India, his Fort Lauderdale-based Resolve Marine Group is clearing a Sri Lankan port of six vessels sunk in the 1990s during that country's war against Tamil separatists. Farrell, CEO, founded Resolve more than 30 years ago. It conducts its salvage and response operations from bases in Fort Lauderdale, Mobile, Ala., Singapore and the United Kingdom. It's expanding its oil spill response business in China, marine salvage and response in Asia, and offshore industry support in the Gulf of Mexico. His Resolve Maritime Academy subsidiary, which trains cruise, cargo and yacht crew members in shipboard safety and firefighting, plans to expand course offerings and open a simulation training center in Fort Lauderdale.
