SPOTLIGHT
Located just minutes away from St. Augustine, Vilano Beach is gaining more attention nowadays, and a newly renovated 1950s-style hotel adds to its draw.
Haley’s Court, with 16 rooms, bills itself as a boutique hotel with modern amenities. Roadside motor inns began to pop up in Vilano Beach in the 1940s and 1950s, with Haley’s Court among them, says co-owner Damon Lee. The popularity of these inns decreased over the decades, and Lee’s father was able to purchase Haley’s Court in 1999. Until recently, it was used for longer-term rentals.
Lee, a local Realtor, and Valerie Lee, his aunt and an interior designer, decided to transform Haley’s Court. The timing felt right with two new hotels in Vilano Beach and a new Publix signaling growth in the area, Lee explains.
Like most renovation projects, the reno cost more than expected — about $1 million total. It included an overhaul of the plumbing, wiring, windows and more.
“We’ve done a lot of upgrades and updates, but we’ve kept a lot of the original stuff,” Lee says. That includes some of the original bathroom tile, terrazzo floors in some areas, and art deco style ceilings and decor. The exterior is also similar to the original look. Yet there are modern touches like digital check-in and Wi-Fi.
Haley’s Court opened in mid-November. Lee expects bookings to follow seasonal trends in the area.
