On Display in China

Three Florida State University artists mounted solo displays of black-and-white photography, surrealistic oils and ceramics in China this summer, becoming the first Americans to exhibit at Ningbo Museum of Art, one of China’s largest provincial museums. For master’s degree student Andrew Ross and FSU faculty members Holly Hanessian and Carrie Ann Baade, the 10-day showings are turning into multifaceted cultural exchanges.

Ross, a former commercial photographer, was made an honorary professor at Taiyuan Normal University. Hanessian, a ceramist, will curate a show of American ceramics next year in Shanghai and Jingdezhen. Surrealist Baade lectured at the Ningbo Vocational School of Art on the influence of pop culture on contemporary art.
