On a mission to get more women into engineering programs

As a recent mechanical engineering graduate at the University of Florida, Erin Winick would like to see more women join her in the maledominated profession.

“I’ve always been passionate about science and getting young girls interested in science and engineering,” she says.

Before graduating in December, Winick used money she’d earned from internships to start a company in Gainesville called Sci Chic that produces 3-D printed jewelry. Her target market is middle school girls.

“I want to show them that science is a lot more creative and fun,” she says.

Gov. Rick Scott’s office awarded Winick with a Young Entrepreneur Award in the spring.

Winick says Sci Chic, with three other employees, has revenue of about $5,000 a month. Funding from grants and pitch competitions is helping to pay expenses. She’s hoping to grow the business now that she’s graduated and working at it full time.
