Who Said That?

" The building is in fantastic shape considering the years. The worst part is the things that have been done to 'improve' it."

-- Dan Beswick, president of the Foundation for the Preservation of Victor Lundy's South Gate Community House

Residents of South Gate, a 1955 version of the master-planned community, know that the character of their southside Sarasota neighborhood is enhanced by its midcentury modern community center.

Designed by noted “Sarasota School of architecture” talent Victor Lundy, the historically designated pavilion, with walls of glass on two sides, provides views of Phillippi Creek and plenty of natural light. It's used for weddings, birthday parties, community meetings and other events. It even has a pool that South Gate residents can use.

They are proud of it. A new sign on Siesta Circle reads “A Victor Lundy Designed Building.”

The building is now 59 years old, and if the structure is going to remain useful, the residents say it needs a makeover.
