Thumbs Up on Med School

The Florida Board of Governors has granted Florida International University permission to open a school of medicine. Plans call for the first class to graduate in 2012. FIU must now convince the Legislature to help foot the bill for startup costs -- an estimated $250 million over the first 10 years. By 2025, FIU officials estimate, the school will account for 8,300 jobs and have an annual economic impact of $1.1 billion. The Board of Governors also approved a med school for the University of Central Florida.
