Snagging Burnham

The Burnham Institute for Medical Research has selected the Lake Nona area in southeast Orlando as the site of its new East Coast research facility. Based in La Jolla, Calif., the institute is expected to create 300 jobs in central Florida and spur development of a cluster of biotech research businesses that will complement other area projects in the works, including a Veterans Administration hospital and a University of Central Florida medical school. The state's $155-million incentive package to attract Burnham must be matched with local money, infrastructure and services. Orlando was chosen over the other finalist for the project, Port St. Lucie.
