The cruise industry supported more than 128,000 jobs, paying nearly $4.8 billion in income in Florida last year, according to a study commissioned by the International Council of Cruise Lines.

The report says Florida derived more benefit from the cruise industry than did any other state, amounting to some 39% of the industry's national employment and 34% of its direct spending last year.

"Last year was challenging due to weather disruptions and fewer new ships delivered," said Michael Crye, president of ICCL. "Through those challenges, however, the cruise industry remained a robust economic resource."

The study says the North American cruise industry generated $32.4 billion in 2005 -- up nearly 8% from the year before.
