Algae Alert

Algae bloom in Barnes Sound adjacent to U.S. 1
Researchers are tracking a stubborn algae bloom in southern Biscayne Bay and the northeast corner of Florida Bay that is killing sea grass beds and choking other plant and animal life. Fishing guides say the bloom has grown steadily over the past year, leading some to blame the nearby U.S. 1 road widening. Researchers also suspect increased rainfalls that dump nutrient-laden water into the sensitive fishing grounds off southern Miami-Dade.
