At the beginning of March, I had the pleasure of delivering the keynote address at the St. Lucie Economic Development Council's (EDC) partnership luncheon. I was humbled and honored when Pete Tesch, the president of the St. Lucie EDC, reached out and invited me to speak. The event was extremely well-attended and brought together public and private business executives from across the region along with local government leaders.

On March 5, 1976, David Hill, a kid from the suburbs in Altamonte Springs, and Lisa Long, a farmer's daughter, went on a first date to the Central Florida Fair. They became high school sweethearts, dated through college, and Lisa's father, Zellwood muck farmer Billy Long, asked David to come work with him on the farm.

My mother was a single parent, but a very grown-up woman, and there were certain things she demanded of me: good behavior, clean clothes to wear to school, obey my teachers and be a good citizen in the neighborhood. She created disciplines and an inner personal structure that were an important part of my beginning.

In the eight years since Raechel Canipe graduated from college, she's held eight jobs at four companies. A baby boomer might question that job-hopping — but for Canipe, like many Millennials, switching positions has opened doors to learning, career opportunities and giving back.

In 2005, I wrote a story called “Critical Condition” — my first for FLORIDA TREND — about Florida's nurse faculty shortage. Back then, Florida had about 18 million residents and was grappling with 3,000 RN vacancies. The state's nursing schools, meanwhile, were scrambling to fill instructor slots and turning away hundreds of applicants.

Our April issue is one of the largest monthly issues in Florida Trend history — so large that staples alone would not hold it together. Due to its sheer size, we had to work with our printer to change the bindery process, having them “perfect bind” the magazine, as opposed to our usual method of “saddle stitching” (stapling) it together. A big thank you goes out to Jill South, our production director, who worked tirelessly to make sure this extra-large issue of Florida Trend came together seamlessly.
