Twenty-five years ago, the St. Johns River was in trouble, and no one was protecting it. Runoff from farms and leaky septic tanks was causing massive algae blooms and the river was in danger of crashing, much like the Indian River had done.
Enter the St. Johns Riverkeeper, which has taken more than 65,000 students out on the water and filed countless lawsuits to protect Florida's largest river.
The Riverkeeper, which is both a person and an organization, safeguards the waterway from its main office at Jacksonville University, right on the banks of the river.
