"A friend of mine opened up one python and found two deer in it."
It’s been a good 30 minutes of fishing and Jeff Corwin, host of the TV show “Wildlife Nation: Expedition Florida,” hasn’t hooked anything. The native Bostonian is flustered, not just by his lack of luck along the canal in the Miccosukee reservation, but by the brutal Florida sun.
“Let’s find some shade,” he says to Nick Gonzalez, project coordinator for the Miccosukee Tribe’s Fish and Wildlife department, who’s piloting the airboat.
Turns out the fish want shade, too. Gonzalez spots an overhanging tree with dozens of fish — Mayan cichlids, oscars, tilapia and peacock bass, hovering in the dark shade below it. They’re all invasive species, which is what Corwin, a naturalist and Emmy-Award-winning TV host, wants to remove from the Everglades.
