Jobless Claims Down in Holiday Week

The U.S. Department of Labor on Thursday estimated 3,759 initial unemployment claims were filed during the week that ended Nov. 30, down from 6,360 the previous week.

The 3,759 claims came in a Thanksgiving-shortened week and were the lowest for a week since 3,698 claims were filed during the last week of May 2022, which was shortened by Memorial Day.

Even with brief spikes in claims following Hurricane Helene and Hurricane Milton, the state headed into the Thanksgiving holiday period with an average of 6,572 claims a week since the start of the year.

The state had a 3.3 percent unemployment rate from April through October.

The state Department of Commerce will release a November unemployment report on Dec. 20.

Nationally, 224,000 claims were filed during the week that ended Nov. 30, up from a revised count of 215,000 for the week ending Nov. 23.
