Readers use the email newsletter Just Ask Boo, which has editions in Miami-Dade (two), Broward and Palm Beach counties, to ask each other for recommendations about everything from camps and physicians to dealing with cranky preteens and divorces. Subscriptions are free, but access to past (non-anonymous) recommendations costs $5.95 a month.
The bulk of JAB’s revenue comes from ads in its four newsletters. With a subscription base of 30,000 women, largely in affluent ZIP codes, the newsletters attract advertisers, including Realtors, a car dealership, upscale malls and private schools.
President Province “Boo” Zamek, who started the company five years ago and now has 15 employees, is raising JAB’s second round of angel investment, to fund the new technology and other expansion requirements. “We set out to raise $200,000, and we have exceeded that goal,” she says. “We’re going to go a little higher.”
