Housing costs are rising far faster than income, creating an alarming affordability crisis in America, reports the Center for Housing Policy in its study "Paycheck to Paycheck: Wages and the Cost of Housing in America." Housing costs in southeast Florida:

Market 2005 Median Home Price 1-Bedroom Rent
Fort Lauderdale $210,000 $830/Month
West Palm Beach $245,000 $761/Month
Miami $225,000 $775/Month
