7 | AutoNation | Fort Lauderdale |
The key for the rest of 2011 for AutoNation (Public Company No. 7), the nation's largest car retailer (and owner of Autoway dealerships), and for Toyota and Lexus importer and distributor JM Family Enterprises (Private Company No. 3) is how much their businesses get disrupted by the Japan quake and tsunami. Up until the disaster, AutoNation was rolling, with a 23% jump in new vehicle sales in the first quarter. JM expects the quake-caused production shortfall to be made up by the fourth quarter and says its other businesses have been performing well above expectations this year.

25 | Seacor Holdings | Fort Lauderdale |
Fort Lauderdale-based Seacor Holdings (Public No. 25) makes its living on the seas — serving the offshore oil industry and other marine needs — and 2010 was very good for it. The company's environmental services division brought in tens of millions of dollars responding to the Deepwater Horizon oil spill. Rising revenue pushed Seacor up nine slots. But this year, as the Deepwater Horizon cleanup wound down, a dearth of new drilling permits issued by the Obama administration has hammered demand for its services.
