Condo Insurance Payoff

Two years after getting slammed by Hurricane Wilma, the 378-unit Chalfonte condominium complex in Boca Raton has won an $8.1-million award from its insurance news, Australia-based QBE Insurance Group. Dan Rosenbaum, a Becker & Poliakoff attorney who represented the Chalfonte, thinks the verdict will lead to more suits against QBE, the largest insurer of condominium associations in Florida. Rosenbaum’s firm already has 10 other cases pending against QBE involving storm damage to condos. The Chalfonte case hinged on whether Wilma’s damage exceeded the policy’s deductible.
