Rescuing St. George's Lighthouse

Rebuilding Cape St. George Light

When Cape St. George Light, an 1852 lighthouse on Little St. George Island, tumbled into the Gulf of Mexico on Oct. 21, 2005, due to storm damage and beach erosion, members of the St. George Lighthouse Association vowed to “rescue the light.’’ This month, crews will top out the reconstructed 77-foot lighthouse tower at a safer site 11 miles away, in the St. George Island business district, alongside a new Visitor Center & Lighthouse Museum. The state contributed $573,000 toward the rebuilding; the 500-member Lighthouse Association chipped in $120,000 and labor.
