Cutting Edge Architecture: Captiva Island house

The owners requested that residential designer James Lucia of Winter Park create something different for their Captiva Island home. To accommodate them, Lucia went round and round. Curves abound in the 13,990-sq.-ft. home overlooking the Gulf of Mexico. The structure itself curves, as do window panels, sliding glass doors and colorful strip lights that glow from the ceiling. The stairway curves next to a chandelier that spirals alongside of it from the top of the third level. Out back, a framework of “Star Trek”-inspired rings — the owner is a fan — hovers overhead. The rings serve as a decorative feature that defines the pool deck, which emphasizes its own set of curves. The deck is built on three levels, with pools positioned on two levels and a sun shelf and whirlpool spa on the top.
