Times Publishing Company names Conan Gallaty President; Executive Editor Mark Katches becomes a Vice-President

TAMPA BAY, FL – The Tampa Bay Times announced today promotions for two senior executives. Conan Gallaty becomes president of Times Publishing Company, and Mark Katches becomes a vice-president.

Both men joined the Times in 2018 and have advanced the company’s digital initiatives. In 17 months, the Times has grown its base of digital-only subscribers to almost 20,000.

“With enormous pleasure, I congratulate two colleagues who are helping the Times embrace its digital future,” said CEO and chairman Paul Tash.

Gallaty, 44, came to the Times as chief digital officer, with a record of success at other news companies. As president of Times Publishing, he will assume overall responsibility for the business operations of the company, including advertising, circulation and operations.

Gallaty served as a principal author of the company’s strategic business plan, which was accelerated by the coronavirus pandemic. Nearly two-thirds of subscribers have activated their digital account, giving them access to the Times seven days a week.

Katches, 57, is the executive editor and leads the Times’ award-winning newsroom. He is widely regarded as one of the country’s leading investigative journalists.

Since joining the Times, Katches has brought a greater focus to digital journalism and has organized a network of news organizations to cover climate change in Florida.

The news operation and editorial pages will continue to report separately to Tash.

“Despite all the turmoil that 2020 has brought, this is also a season of renewal for the Times, and I could not be more proud of it,” Tash said.

Both promotions take effect July 1.
