UF Health's department of anesthesiology develops N95 mask alternative

In response to a shortage of N95 protective masks, the University of Florida Health’s department of anesthesiology has developed an alternative, using materials that can be found in every hospital.

The masks are made from Halyard H600 two-ply spun polypropylene, says Dr. Bruce Spiess, professor of anesthesiology at the UF College of Medicine. It’s the material that surrounds surgical instrument trays. It cannot be penetrated by water, bacteria or particles, according to UF Health.
