Florida Trend receives five 'Editorial Excellence' honors from the Alliance of Area Business Publishers

NORWALK, CT—The Alliance of Area Business Publishers (AABP) presented 116 Editorial Excellence awards to newspaper and magazine business periodicals on June 29, 2019, at the closing celebration of its three-day annual Summer Conference in Atlanta, GA.

With 511 entries from 41 publications in the U.S., Canada and Australia, the competitive field was both impressive and diverse.

Florida Trend featured wins in five categories:

Best feature layout — “Florida’s Water Future”; Gary Bernloehr, Jason Morton The water-line visual ties together the pages and creates consistency, and strong photographs anchor each spread. Small sections are arranged to facilitate reading, and headlines break the package into clearly-defined, manageable chunks. There is good use of subtle color.

Best personality profile — “Philosopher President”; Jason Garcia Richly reported and elegantly written, this profile wonderfully captures the personality of a nationally-lauded college president who is a mensch, a musical wizard and an intellectual who advocates that anyone can learn anything if the conditions for learning are right.

Best recurring feature — “Icon”; Art Levy Interesting people and deeper questions make this entry stand out. The questions penetrate and the answers have good insight to them.

Best explanatory journalism — “919 New Floridians Every Day”; Mike Vogel In taking on the hot-button topic of immigration, this package thoroughly explores the issue with a combination of graphics and stories. Columns from industry insiders such as those in construction and agriculture offer perspective, while infographics efficiently communicate a lot of information.

Best magazine staff — From big stories that provide coverage for one of the nation’s most dynamic states to little stories that focus tightly and locally, Florida Trend gives its readers remarkable complexity and depth. Charts, graphs and maps, along with savvy use of photographs tell stories about demographics, health care, transportation or political issues intertwined with business. Off-beat, quirky business stories spice up the magazine’s consistently comprehensive coverage.

As in past years, the most popular categories were Best Feature and Best Explanatory Journalism. This year, submissions for Best Ancillary Publication and Best Scoop also topped the list, with superb pieces from writers in all circulation categories.

“The high-quality journalism being done by these publications keeps readers thoroughly up-to-date and, importantly, includes a lot of data, context and historical perspective that are especially important as truth increasingly gets drowned in a flood of social media snippets,” said Reuben Stern, who coordinated the judging by faculty members at the University of Missouri School of Journalism. “The winning entries once again combine solid research, great sourcing, excellent on-the-ground reporting, deep community knowledge, and creative thinking.”

By uncovering news of business expansion and related economic impacts, keeping an eye on how public dollars and tax incentives are allocated, and providing guidance for business people trying to navigate a host of modern complexities, regional business publications continue to offer a vital information resource in print and online.
