South Florida’s top 50 high schools

New to the U.S. News & World Report's many education rankings is the best high schools by metro area feature, which revealed the top public schools in South Florida. The media company released evaluations of 933 of the nation's metro areas. Six factors were used in ranking the schools – graduation rates, college readiness, reading and math proficiency, reading and math performance, underserved student performance and college curriculum breadth. Once upon a time, Florida’s public universities weren’t overly concerned if students took longer than four years to graduate with a bachelor’s degree — national rankings typically use only the six-year graduation rate in assessing schools’ effectiveness. But for the past five years, under Marshall Criser III, chancellor of the State University System of Florida, public universities have focused on improving both their four-year graduation rates and their retention rates. University of Florida to Lead Marijuana Research Consortium

The State University System of Florida Board of Governors has selected the University of Florida to lead a statewide consortium studying health outcomes related to medical marijuana. UF will lead the Consortium for Medical Marijuana Clinical Outcomes Research, which will be composed of public and private universities engaged in research on clinical outcomes of medical marijuana. Will new Lottery warning labels shortchange Florida’s education budget?

On Tuesday, legislative leaders sent DeSantis a bill (HB 629) that will require all Lottery tickets, advertisements and promotions to carry either the message of “WARNING: LOTTERY GAMES MAY BE ADDICTIVE” or “PLAY RESPONSIBLY,” beginning Jan. 1. The warning must cover at least 10 percent of the ticket’s surface. Florida would be the first state lottery in North America to require such a prominent warning, according to lottery industry officials. [Source: Florida Phoenix]
