Creature comforts: Software engineering company Beast Code outgrows its headquarters

Fort Walton Beach-based Beast Code, a software company formed in 2014, expected its headquarters would be big enough for at least five years. But Beast Code’s computer scientists won major Department of Defense contracts, and the company’s employee roster has grown to nearly 40. CEO Matt Zimmermann expects the growth to continue and says Beast Code will expand its facility to accommodate the more than 100 employees it expects to add within the next few years.

Beast Code will get local and state tax abatement incentives, rebates and cash grants totaling $120,000.

Beast Code specializes in operational training, modeling and simulation and data mining primarily for the military. The company’s rapid growth has landed it on the list of 50 Florida Companies to Watch, a statewide program managed by the economic development group GrowFL.

Beast Code’s management team, competitive market position and strong community involvement were among several factors that put the company in contention for the recognition of second-stage companies, says Tom O’Neal, GrowFL’s executive director. Second-stage companies are those with six to 150 full-time employees and between $750,000 and $100 million in annual revenue.
