The Sunday after Hurricane Michael, First United Methodist Church of Port St. Joe Pastor Geoffrey Lentz held worship service at the high school. People and pastors from six or seven different congregations showed up for a communal gathering to give thanks.

He thought of Abraham’s journey from Ur of the Chaldees. Similar to the biblical patriarch, the people in this coastal community just 10 miles away from where the storm made landfall a week ago are headed into the unknown.

Their homes are ravaged. Businesses and livelihoods are shattered. But many here say they will go forward, determined to rebound.
