Power Upgrade

Florida Power & Light Co. has announced a 10-year multimillion-dollar plan to upgrade its system and protect it from hurricanes. Plans call for adding and improving power poles, aggressively trimming trees, improving some components of substations and paying 25% of the cost if municipalities want to bury their power lines. FPL says it will be the first utility in the nation to build new power poles and lines using the National Electric Safety Code's extreme wind velocity standards. Many improvements will be in place before this year's hurricane season, FPL says.
