Victory for Sports, Arts

Diane Sears | 9/1/2007

A $1.1-billion project for three downtown sports and entertainment venues went down to the wire but won approval from commissions in Orlando and Orange County in late July.

Rendering of the proposed arena in downtown Orlando
Plans call for:
» A $480-million arena in 2010 a few blocks south of the existing home for the Orlando Magic. An International Drive contingent tried unsuccessfully to have a facility built in the tourist area.

» A $425-million new performing arts center in 2012. Supporters have raised $80 million-plus in private donations, with a goal of $110 million.

» $175 million in renovations to the Florida Citrus Bowl by 2011.
