Insurance pressures continue after Nicole

Despite pounding parts of the East Coast, Hurricane Nicole will not hit Florida’s insurance market as hard as Hurricane Ian. While Nicole won’t cause as large of losses as Ian, Fitch Ratings on Friday released an analysis that pointed to the combination of the storms continuing to build pressure on Florida’s troubled property-insurance system. Why are so many car washes popping up around Tampa Bay?

In a move that reflects a nationwide trend, companies are hoping to saturate Florida — and especially Tampa Bay — with as many car wash locations as possible. They know in order to get consumers to fork over anywhere from $20 to $50 for a monthly subscription, it needs to be convenient for them. As new residents pour into the area, many are commuting longer distances, which dirties up vehicles fast. More from the Tampa Bay Times.

Central Florida toll authority fights vulnerable community over ‘Great Wall of Poinciana’

Central Florida’s powerful toll road authority has provoked a fight with a distant, underdog community where residents decry a proposed expressway along their main street as the Great Wall of Poinciana. The conflict centers in Poinciana, an unincorporated community an hour south of Orlando’s city hall and miles south of Kissimmee. Its population of more than 70,000, many drawn to affordable homes, ranks with the region’s largest cities. Poinciana straddles two counties, Osceola and Polk, rendering it politically splintered and feeble. There is nobody like a mayor and no elected politician lives there. Caroline O’Connor didn’t know what her ceiling was when she entered the sports business world, simply because there were so few examples of women who traveled her path. Turns out, she had no limit. The Miami Marlins promoted O’Connor to president of business operations on Monday, making them the first U.S. major sports franchise to have women serving simultaneously as president and general manager.
