Migrant workers already leaving Florida’s Hurricane Ian cleanup

Migrant laborers, many of whom lack permanent legal status, travel from all over the country to clean up properties ravaged in the wake of natural disasters. Storm survivors often are unaware of the conditions under which these laborers toil — even as they rip out moldy drywall and unclog flooded toilets inside their homes. But in the wake of Hurricane Ian, many migrant laborers are leaving Florida almost as soon as they arrive, to the chagrin of retirees who are relying on them for repairs. Feds push back in Florida drug importation case

The Biden administration this week asked a judge to reject allegations that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration has “dragged its feet” on a Florida proposal to import prescription drugs from Canada and has not properly complied with a public-records request. U.S. Department of Justice attorneys filed a 27-page document that pushed back against a lawsuit the Florida Agency for Health Care Administration filed in August to try to spur a decision on the importation proposal and to obtain a series of records. St. Pete property insurer’s exit from Florida market hangs in limbo

UPC Insurance executives are providing next to no guidance on the status of plans to exit its business from the Florida property insurance marketplace. The St. Petersburg-based property insurance company announced a runoff, or sale, of 166,000 residential policies in Florida in late August after racking up major losses in that book of business. The arrival of Hurricane Ian — the second costliest storm to hit the U.S. with an estimated $60 billion in insured losses — complicated those plans More from the Tampa Bay Business Journal.

Ripley renovation includes NASA’s ‘lost’ moonwalk videotapes, outer-space exhibit

NASA’s “lost” tapes of the first moonwalk are part of a new outer-space gallery at the Ripley’s attraction on International Drive. The company purchased the Apollo 11 videotapes at a Sotheby’s auction for $1.82 million in 2019, and museum visitors now can see the tapes that feature Neil Armstrong’s famous “one giant leap” moment. Nearby relics at Ripley’s include a 3,000-pound meteorite, a piece of Mars that can be touched, Buzz Aldrin’s jumpsuit and five strands of Armstrong’s hair. The new Out of This World Gallery represents the completion of the renovation of the I-Drive attraction, which has been planning and phasing in new exhibits since mid-2020. Museum of Ice Cream returns to a rooftop at this adults-only hotel in Miami Beach

When the Museum of Ice Cream opened in the Faena District in December of 2017, Miami flocked there with the kids and cellphones in hand, hoping to reign supreme on Instagram. It closed in 2019, taking its problematic plastic sprinkles with it. Now, TikTok is king, and the selfie paradise is returning for a special weekend pop-up. But this time, only adults are invited.
