Could Floridians go to work in the metaverse soon?

The changes to work life since the COVID-19 pandemic have made a lot of things easier, from commute time, meetings, phone calls and even training. But what if the next step in the evolution of work involved employees jumping into the metaverse? Founders of a South Florida company think you could be walking into work in a digital environment in the future. More from WPLG.

As Artemis I launch nears, more Orions on horizon

The Orion spacecraft could be on its first trip to the moon on the Artemis I mission in less than a month, but teams at Kennedy Space Center continue to prep the next capsules planned for human missions, the first of which could fly in just over 18 months. Meanwhile Lockheed Martin, the capsule’s prime contractor for the first five Artemis flights won a new NASA contract this month to build out another three spacecraft. More from the Orlando Sentinel.

The business of Tampa Bay’s psychics, mediums and the metaphysical

When Pearl Prather opened Mystikal Scents in 2006, she served customers mostly from the Thonotosassa area where her store is located. But with the rise of social media, and then the pandemic, she watched interest in the metaphysical grow. People started coming from all over Tampa Bay to visit her witchcraft shop. The world of psychics and fortune tellers are filled with misconceptions, but Prather said that has started to change over the years. More from the Tampa Bay Times.

West Palm budget: Why the city is foregoing $2 million in tax revenue

West Palm Beach's property tax rate was reduced for the first time since 2008 when the city approved its 2023 budget. In cutting property tax rates to roughly $8.20 per $1,000 in taxable property value from about $8.35 per $1,000 in taxable property value, the city decided to forego $2 million in additional property tax revenue. Miami plan would reduce scooters’ hours and numbers

The scooter program in the City of Miami has been both praised and criticized, and a pilot program was shut down last fall, then revived with more safety regulations enacted. A proposal to approve a permanent motorized scooter rental program for a portion of the city has been stalled for 13 months while city officials studied the matter. On the city commission’s agenda is a proposal to amend the current ordinance governing “bicycles, skateboards, scooters, and other similar devices” by modifying and providing for additional safety measures and other regulations. How a South Tampa toffee shop went from neighborhood rave to Oprah fave

Somehow, Lisa Schalk says, she knew that one day Oprah Winfrey would come through for her family’s South Tampa toffee shop. “It was my dream and my goal,” said Schalk, 61, “to be one of Oprah’s Favorite Things.” Making the mega-celebrity’s annual list of eclectic, gift-worthy products had the potential to rock a small business’ world. And in 2013, for Toffee to Go, it did. “People still say today “Oh, you’re one of Oprah’s Favorite Things,” said husband Jim Schalk, 63.

200 drones will put on a nighttime show in South Florida

Maybe this time the show will go on. Pompano Beach’s long-anticipated drone show will take to the sky at 7 p.m. Nov. 12 — months after it was rained out in a monstrous storm. Against the night sky, 200 drones will dance to music. Among the expected features: The fish in the city’s logo will jump out of a bubble and take a swim, and a catamaran sailboat will sail in the sky.
