› How Miami arts organizations are putting artists of color in the forefront this season
In just a few weeks time, giant hair braids will hang and twist around the palm trees outside of the Museum of Contemporary Art in North Miami. A Trinidadian soprano will take the stage opening night at the New World Center in Miami Beach. As Miami’s art season approaches, artists of color are at the forefront.

› Noisy, smelly marijuana processing center irks Lake County neighbors
A gray sky hangs over a small lake, with flowers in the background. But there’s a faint hum, like the drone of a plane that never seems to land, that upends the otherwise natural scene. “That’s just a taste,” said Lynn Graber of the noise from a nearby medical marijuana processing plant. “And then there’s the smell,” said Graber’s neighbor, Debbie Himmelrich. “Ugh, the smell.” Some of the residents describe it as skunk-like. Others say it has a chemical whiff to it, “Like acetone,” said Himmelrich’s husband, John.

› City of Sarasota to build new dunes at Lido Beach, work on roundabout project in upcoming year
The city of Sarasota is planning dozens of capital improvement projects for the coming year, ranging from building dunes on Lido Beach to reconstructing city streets. These projects are part of Sarasota’s 2022-23 budget, which the City Commission unanimously approved last Monday. The budget is nearly $252 million, an 8% increase over the current year’s spending plan.

› Voters to decide on Brevard Public Schools property tax increase on November ballot
Brevard County voters will decide on Nov. 8 whether to increase school property taxes, primarily to pay for a boost in salaries to Brevard Public Schools staff. A measure on the November ballot would require additional taxes of $1 per $1,000 of taxable value of Brevard properties. That would be $153.10 more per year for the median Brevard single-family home, which has a taxable value of $153,100.
