Florida's weekly jobless claims below 5,000
Amid conflicting economic trends, first-time unemployment claims in Florida continue to slow.
The U.S. Department of Labor on Thursday estimated 4,995 initial jobless claims were filed in the state during the week that ended Sept. 10.
That was down from a revised count of 5,472 claims during the week that ended Sept. 3 and was the lowest total since the final full week of May.
The estimate came as the state Department of Economic Opportunity prepares to release a report Friday on August unemployment numbers.
Florida had a 2.7 percent unemployment rate in July, representing an estimated 283,000 Floridians out of work from a workforce of about 10.66 million.
During the past four weeks, Florida has averaged 5,411 new claims a week, according to Department of Labor data.
A federal report released Tuesday detailed inflation numbers. While gas and energy prices declined, the country continues grappling with rising costs of housing, food and health care.
