Causes, effects of supply chain struggle on Florida

You’ve probably noticed prices of everything from gas to groceries going up. Procter & Gamble say it is raising prices on retail items because costs are rising due to supply chain issues. The surge in demand for products as the pandemic lessens has been higher than many industries were ready for. That and a trucker shortage means it takes goods longer to get to you. The Florida Trucking Association says it is short-staffed and incredibly busy but has still managed to work with the other links in the supply chain. More from WINK News.

Along the Overseas Highway, businesses line the only way in and out of the Florida Keys. You may see U.S. 1 as the long road to where you’re going. Space Coast restaurants received more than $24 million from federal Restaurant Relief Fund

The federal Restaurant Relief Fund brought more than $24.27 million into the local economy, helping 120 Space Coast food purveyors get back on stable footing after severe COVID-19 pandemic loses. Geoff Luebkemann, vice president of the Florida Restaurant and Lodging Association, said the program was crucial for restaurants in the wake of the pandemic. "It absolutely is a critical lifeline," he said for those businesses whose expenses didn't stop when revenue did. More from Florida Today.

If you’ve been wondering when you’re going to get a piece of the new Miami tech action, you have company. Tech Trail recently wrote that of the more than 1,800 jobs promised by firms moving to or expanding in Miami, fewer than 300 have materialized — though these companies have three years to fulfill those hiring pledges. TD Bank sees strong market in Jacksonville

While some banks are reducing their physical bank branch footprints, TD Bank plans to add more in Northeast Florida. But they may not look the same as before. Nick Miceli, TD Bank regional president, Florida Metro, said that in addition to the bank adding a 30,000-square-foot operations center in Jacksonville, it also will add several new retail branches to the market. Why so much ugly algae in our springs? A UF professor has a novel answer

 Matthew Cohen is not entirely a contrarian when it comes to the cause of run-away algae growth in the region’s springs, but while scientists focus on nutrients as the culprit, Cohen is providing some different food for thought. Oxygen is Cohen’s theory. He suggests that the low flow of chilly oxygen-rich water from the aquifer allows warmer, tannin-darkened, acidic river water to dominate.

‘Pizza, pizza.’ ‘Where’s the beef?’: St. Petersburg adman dies at 80

floridaYears ago on a visit home, Cliff Freeman walked into the Little Caesars on Fourth Street N. He was the guy behind the famous “Pizza, pizza” slogan, he told the employees. He was even the voice. “They didn’t believe him,” said his brother, Hunter Freeman. But Cliff Freeman was the mind behind ads that stood out for 30 years, starting in the 1980s, from the old woman unimpressed by puny burgers for Wendy’s to a hard-to-shake jingle for Almond Joy. Freeman died Sept. 5 of pneumonia. He was 80.
