› Army hauls 3 billion pounds of sand to Miami-Dade beaches
The Army Corps of Engineers this year plans to haul from upland mines nearly 1.3 million cubic yards of sand – 3 billion pounds’ worth – to re-sand beachfronts on Miami Beach, Bal Harbour and Sunny Isles Beach. The effort is part of a decades-old program to resurface eroded beaches along the county’s coastline. But unlike prior iterations of the program, these and many future sanding projects will be fully paid for by the federal government, a report from Miami-Dade Mayor Daniella Levine Cava’s office said.

› Manufacturer opens new plant in Southwesrt Florida — and away from its longtime home
Impact resistant window and door manufacturer PGT Innovations, in tracking a surge in business, is opening a new facility in Lee County that will house some 250 employees. The 130,000 facility is in Fort Myers, in a vacant distribution center. The facility will be a production center for doors and door frames, PGT President and CEO Jeff Jackson tells the Business Observer in an interview. “We are expanding and looking to continue growing,” says Jackson. “Florida is hot right now.”

› Tampa airport strikes car sharing deal, allowing for peer-to-peer rentals
Car sharing just got a little easier at Tampa International Airport. The Hillsborough County Aviation Authority on Thursday approved updated rules for peer-to-peer car sharing apps and services that connect car owners and renters, like an automotive version of Airbnb. It also approved an official concessions agreement with one such service, Turo, with which it has waged a long legal battle over licenses and fees.

› Kushner plans 4 high-rise towers in downtown Fort Lauderdale
New downtown skyscrapers are spreading west along Broward Boulevard, with another mammoth project in the pipeline to be developed by New York-based Kushner Cos. The Broward Crossing project would bring 1,300 apartments plus offices and shops to the south side of Broward Boulevard in downtown Fort Lauderdale, across the street from the Brightline station and the coming joint governmental campus that will serve both Broward County and Fort Lauderdale.
