› Feds to give $30.8 million to Tampa Bay area transit agencies for coronavirus relief
Tampa Bay’s bus agencies, struggling with decreased ridership and financial challenges linked to the coronavirus pandemic, are set to receive $30.8 million in federal relief money. The transit authorities in Hillsborough and Pinellas counties will split the local portion of a $14 billion Federal Transit Administration COVID-19 relief package that was passed this month.
› Miami native Madeleine Thakur is named first woman president of The Children’s Movement
The Children’s Movement of Florida, a statewide nonprofit that advocates for early learning and parent support, on Tuesday announced its new president — the first woman and first mother to join the organization’s executive ranks. Madeleine Thakur, a Miami native, will begin her new post immediately. She began as chief of staff at the organization in 2017, after spending almost a decade working on economic and social development in Latin America and the Caribbean.
› Sarasota tries to find path forward for homeless service nonprofits
After some wrangling, the city of Sarasota thinks it finally has a way to allow community-minded organizations to provide showers and other services for homeless residents in the city. But while the majority of city commissioners agreed to research a special zoning and permitting program to allow for such services, many felt the effort would be regressive and hinder the city’s protracted efforts to address homelessness.
› Spectrum launches 24-hour AccuWeather TV in Orlando
Spectrum customers in the Orlando area are getting a new way to plan for rain. The cable company is launching the AccuWeather TV Network for all subscribers to Spectrum TV Select or higher video tiers in Central Florida. AccuWeather TV is a 24-hour service with in-studio and field reports for local and national weather.
