› Sarasota County cuts affordable housing requirements for future projects east of I-75
Despite warnings from advocates that doing so would exacerbate local affordable housing shortages, Sarasota County Commissioners moved ahead with a plan that would strip away requirements that developers include lower cost housing in their plans for future projects east of Interstate 75.

› Environmentalists sue to stop Florida from controlling wetlands development
Environmental advocacy groups are suing the federal government to stop Florida from regulating development decisions in many of the state’s wetlands. The lawsuit, filed Thursday in federal court in Washington, D.C., charges that the Environmental Protection Agency rushed a decision last month when it granted Florida permitting authority over dredging and filling in certain wetlands. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers previously controlled such decisions.

St. Augustine's historic Castillo de San Marcos has become a priority at the U.S. Postal Service, literally. Beginning Jan. 24, a $7.95 Priority Mail stamp bearing a stylized image of the 349-year-old fort on the Matanzas River will go on sale at post offices across the country.

Brynne Anne Besio, who led the Bishop Museum of Science and Nature in Bradenton through 13 years of growth and some turbulent times that included the preventable drowning death of its beloved 69-year-old manatee Snooty, will retire from her job as chief executive officer in April.
