› Some Florida Republicans changing voter registrations in aftermath of Trump supporters’ rampage through Capitol
The rampage through and temporary takeover of the Capitol by supporters of President Donald Trump, incited by the president, may be prompting some Florida voters to leave the Republican Party. The numbers are small, but notable. In Miami-Dade, the state’s most populous county, more than seven times as many Republicans as Democrats changed their party registrations in the aftermath of the violence in Washington, D.C.
› Social services nonprofit names new CEO
JFCS of the Suncoast named Arthur Lerman CEO. Lerman has served as interim CEO for the past six months, according to a press release. He will continue to lead JFCS, using over 25 years of experience in nonprofit management. Lerman has a strong history of stabilizing and growing both nonprofit and for-profit organizations, a statement says.
› JAX Chamber names 2020 Small Business Leaders of the Year
The JAX Chamber on Jan. 7 announced its 2021 Small Business Leaders of the Year. The 12 Northeast Florida business leaders were selected by the Chamber Councils, the Beaches Division, the Entrepreneurial Growth Division and ImpactJAX, the Chamber’s young professional group.
› Broward’s jail population again climbs, raising concern over COVID-19 risk
In the first weeks of the pandemic, Broward officials worked together to empty local jails of all but the most serious offenders, and it appeared to work. By the middle of April 2020, the jail population dropped to under 3,000 for the first time in decades. It couldn’t last forever, and it hasn’t. The number is climbing again, leading to concern among some that backlog caused by the pandemic could end up helping the disease spread among inmates.
