› Hurricane Irma caused 400 senior deaths in Florida, study finds
The aftereffects of 2017′s Hurricane Irma appear to have killed more than 400 senior residents of Florida nursing homes, a new university study shows. Researchers at the University of South Florida and Brown University concluded that 433 additional patients died within 90 days of the September 2017 storm, compared to the same period in 2015, when there were no hurricanes.

› MAKO surgical spinoff Neocis raises $72 million to expand robotic dental surgery
Miami’s technology scene notched another win this month as robotic dental surgery company Neocis announced it had raised $72 million from a West Coast investor syndicate. Founded in 2013 by two former executives of billion-dollar robotics group MAKO surgical, Neocis employs approximately 80 workers, with about 50 of them based in Miami.

› Nonprofit woos new CEO from Houston
Erin Broussard, a U.S. Air Force veteran with leadership positions in the mental health field, has been named CEO of The Hope Clubhouse in Fort Myers. Broussard will spearhead the nonprofit’s mission of providing a community of support for adults living with a mental illness and opportunities for paid employment and access to education, housing, and wellness, according to a statement.

› Divided Maitland council denies mayor’s proposal to buy nonprofit civic center property
A split Maitland City Council voted down Mayor Dale McDonald’s plan for the city to buy the nonprofit civic center, avoiding a likely contentious court battle. The mayor was only able to convince Councilman Vance Guthrie Monday night that the city should purchase the property that houses Venue on the Lake, which sits in a prime spot between the public library and Lake Lily.
