"The market is in a race to the bottom, and it has been for a decade."

-- Heywood Sanders, a professor at the University of Texas at San Antonio who studies the meetings and convention business

The Orange County Convention Center is about to host its first major event since the coronavirus pandemic shut down Orlando tourism, even as COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations surge across Central Florida.

The event — a nine-day national amateur volleyball tournament for preteens and teenagers that starts Tuesday and is expected to draw about 17,000 people — is happening in part because taxpayers are helping to pay for it. Demings’ office has also refused to release a copy of the contract for the tournament, which is being organized by the Amateur Athletic Union.
