Florida to award $265 million in extra performance money to universities

Florida intends to distribute $265 million in “performance-based funding” to the state’s public universities based on measures like graduation rates; net tuition and fees; and the median wages of their alumni. The University of Florida is slated to receive the biggest award at $47.7 million. The rest of the state’s universities are to receive smaller slices. The Board of Governors, which oversees the state university system, plans to consider approving the funding on Thursday during a meeting conducted by video conference. [Source: Orlando Sentinel]

Parents, professors, and nonprofits join to petition against new civic literacy test

Families, college educators and nonprofit organizations filed an appeal Tuesday against the recent ruling by the State Board of Education to allow a 100-question multiple choice test to fulfill the state’s college-level civic literacy requirement. According to the new rule, students taking the Florida Civic Literacy Test will only need to answer 60% percent of the questions correctly to demonstrate civic literacy at a college-level understanding. State abruptly ends teacher test fee waiver two months early

The idea received a warm welcome from teachers across Florida. The Department of Education, in response to financial stresses caused by COVID-19, waived the fees associated with renewing educators’ credentials and, because so many testing sites were closed, extended the deadlines to meet the criteria. In-person ACT testing still set at schools in June

Florida colleges and universities creating plans to re-open this fall

While Florida businesses are trying to figure out how, and how fast, to re-open, universities and colleges are doing the same. The State University System's Task Force has been working for several weeks now on a framework for all schools to follow. Governor Ron DeSantis made the announcement last week – that while schools must continue distance learning for now, they can begin creating plans to bring students back to campus this fall. › Former St. Pete council member Karl Nurse announces School Board run
Karl Nurse, who spent 10 years on the St. Petersburg City Council, announced this week that he wants to return to public life as a Pinellas County School Board member. Nurse joins two other candidates for the District 7 seat, which represents most of St. Petersburg and is being vacated two years early by Rene Flowers, who is running for the County Commission.

› Bay District Schools to expand virtual education
As of now, Bay District Schools to start regularly for the next school year, but Bay Virtual School will likely expand. The district took a survey recently and a little over 28% of the parents preferred their children stick with distance learning in the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic. BDS has two options available for parents; they can send their kids back to schools regularly or they can choose to go virtual.
