› SpaceX successfully sends thousands of supplies to the ISS from the Space Coast Thursday
SpaceX sent 5,700 pounds of supplies and more than 250 science experiments to the International Space Station as part of the company’s 19th resupply mission. The liftoff, which was scrubbed Wednesday because of high winds, came at 12:29 p.m. from Cape Canaveral Air Force Station’s launch complex 40. Shortly after takeoff, the first stage booster successfully landed back on SpaceX’s drone ship “Of Course I Still Love You” off the coast of Jacksonville.
› Florida finds niche in tropicals
Florida’s climate allows it to produce tropical fruits and vegetables that few places in the United States can. Jackfruit and mamey are both harvested throughout the summer, while the state’s dragon fruit, passion fruit, and starfruit produce varying yields through winter.
› FWC awarded 20 million dollars to restore Apalachicola Bay oyster population
The money will be put into a five-year plan, with two of those years dedicated to research in partnership with Florida State University to determine where best to establish new oyster beds, and three years of placing oyster substrate in order to create 1000 new acres of productive reef.
› Surfing group gives Florida a 'D' for coastal management
A nonprofit surfing and conservation group gave Florida a "D" in coastal management, because the state keeps allowing homes too close to the ocean, relies too much on seawalls and beach renourishment to guard them, and is ill-prepared for sea-level rise. Only 26% of states earned above a "C" when graded on policies to protect the nation’s coastlines.
