From the days of Henry Flagler through decades of retirees, northerners have found their way to South Florida. But this time, local development officials say, is different. No longer are they seeking second-home sanctuaries. Many are now bringing their businesses. Environment is top priority for Florida Influencers in 2020

State and local officials must prioritize finding ways to handle water quality on the coasts, rising seas and extreme weather, among other environmental issues, Florida’s prominent political and policy figures say. Issues surrounding the environment have risen to the top of the list of priorities of the Florida Influencers, a group of 50 industry leaders across the state, in their final survey of 2019. Human trafficking sting in Tampa sheds light on growing problem in Florida

Hillsborough County deputies recently arrested more than 100 people in connection with a five-month-long undercover investigation surrounding human trafficking. A report published by Florida State University’s Center for the Advancement of Human Rights shows Florida is one of the top three states reportedly receiving the majority of the women and children trafficked annually into the U.S. [Source: WFLA]

› FSU researchers find risk in opening goliath grouper fishery
A review of the iconic Atlantic goliath grouper by a team of Florida State University scientists revealed considerable downsides to proposals to reopen the fishery that has been closed for nearly 30 years. In Fisheries magazine, FSU researchers explain that though the species has recovered to some extent in Florida waters since the closure, it is still vulnerable to rapid population declines that result from cold snaps and red tides.

› Stein Mart launches fine jewelry department
Stein Mart, headquartered in Jacksonville, announced it has launched a fine jewelry department in 51 stores and online. The “Stein Mart Jewel Box” collection features diamonds, pearls, 14K gold, gemstones and designer-branded jewelry with prices ranging from $200 to $5,000. The company said they’re about half off competitors’ prices.

› Plans dropped for $23 million Titusville sports arena/hotel complex
A proposal to build a $23 million indoor sports arena and hotel complex in Titusville has fallen through. The project would have been a public/private partnership partially funded with $7 million from Brevard County's Tourist Development Tax on hotel rooms and other short-term rentals.
