Florida is about to give nearly $400 million to big corporations

Florida is about to give $385 million to some of its biggest corporations. There’s no way to tell how much any individual company will get, because corporate tax returns are confidential. But only an elite circle of corporations will receive refunds -- an estimated 99 percent of Florida’s 2.3 million businesses won’t see a dime. Who will benefit from Florida’s new toll roads? Start with the task forces deciding where they will go.

The three task forces, each with more than 40 members, will spend the next year recommending where more than 300 miles of toll roads through rural parts of the state, an idea lawmakers approved in May. Lawmakers said the task forces would be made up of government officials from a variety of state and local agencies, local planning councils and water agencies, elected officials and members of environmental groups. The Legislature also set aside seats for an individual or “a member of a nonprofit community organization.” [Source: Tampa Bay Times]

Florida appeals court blocks Coral Gables styrofoam ban

Siding with the Florida Retail Federation and upholding the constitutionality of state laws, an appeals court Wednesday rejected a 2016 move by the city of Coral Gables to ban the use of Styrofoam food containers. A three-judge panel of the 3rd District Court of Appeal overturned a ruling by a Miami-Dade County circuit judge who found three state laws unconstitutional and determined Coral Gables was not prevented from enacting the Styrofoam ban. Timing of Florida’s felons voting suit up for debate as 2020 election looms

Lawyers representing opposite sides in a federal lawsuit about felons’ voting rights can’t agree on how quickly a judge should decide the issue, potentially affecting whether hundreds of thousands of Floridians will be able to participate in next year’s presidential primary elections. › Venice hospital names new CFO, lab director
Venice Regional Bayfront Health has named Danny Warren Jr. the hospital’s CFO and Irene Przetocki its laboratory director. Warren has more than 25 years of experience in health care financial oversight and management, according to a press release. He has served as a CFO, controller and auditor for hospitals and other health care facilities and systems. Most recently, he was CFO of Heart of Florida Regional Medical Center and Lake Wales Medical Center.

› 93 Tampa Bay companies ranked among this year's Inc. 5000
Nearly 100 companies from the Tampa Bay region were named among Inc. magazine's 5,000 fastest growing private companies for 2019. The highest-ranked from the bay area was the Welfont Companies, a real estate business in Tampa that recorded 6,871 percent growth over the year. It ranked No. 31 and had $20.4 million in revenue.

› Lockheed Martin lands $99 million deal for Orlando-based missile program
A contract worth as much as $99 million has been awarded to Lockheed Martin to support maintenance and upkeep of air-to-surface missiles sold to Finland, Poland and Australia. The work on the Joint Air-to-Surface Standoff Missile, known as JASSM, will be primarily performed in Orlando.

› Mega-yacht shiplift coming to renovated RMK Merrill-Stevens
RMK Merrill-Stevens, Florida’s first shipyard (founded in Jacksonville in 1885 and operating on the Miami River since 1923) will open its newly renovated and upgraded North Yard early next year. The company’s two boatyards straddle the river; the North Yard borders the Health District and the South Yard is near Marlins Stadium. The $30 million renovation, which included dramatic changes to both yards, has been in the planning stages about three years.
