Florida women to pursue higher paying jobs in construction

| 6/17/2019

WIMAUMA, Fla.June 14—The Helen Gordon Davis Centre for Women, Enterprising Latinas, and HCC SouthShore Campus are partnering to offer a workforce training program starting July 9th for qualified women to become certified to work in construction. The program named Women Building Futures (WBF), funded by Hillsborough County, is designed to help low to moderate income women in unincorporated Hillsborough County communities explore higher paying career options in the growing construction field.

WBF is a 15-week program that contains more than 80 hours of classes to learn carpentry, drywall, painting, block masonry/finishing, flooring, and construction administration. Graduates who successfully complete all requirements will earn certifications from the National Center for Construction Education and Research (NCCER) and OSHA 10. The program is free for qualified applicants based on their residential address and income. Training will commence July 9th and will be held Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6:00-8:30 PM at the Hillsborough Community College South Shore Campus in Ruskin, Fla.

Ann W. Madsen, Executive Director of The Centre for Women, said: “We are delighted to partner with Enterprising Latinas and HCC SouthShore by bringing our accredited construction training program to the SouthShore by offering new opportunities for women who have an interest in learning the construction trades.”

Liz Gutierrez, CEO and Founder of Enterprising Latinas, indicated that “with all of the housing developments being built in the SouthShore, this is the time for women in our region to create their own story of success in the construction industry. There are a variety of high paying careers available in construction, and getting certified through the Women Building Futures course is the first step for women to create their pathway to prosperity.”

Women interested in the course need to attend a mandatory orientation session, present required documents to prove eligibility, and complete the application process before June 26th.
